Monks take march to Suu Kyi’s doorstep.“The wave of anti-government demonstrations sweeping Myanmar touched the doorstep of democracy heroine Aung San Suu Kyi, and Buddhist monks allowed to march past her home Saturday said they were greeted by the detained political leader and that she looked “fit and well.”. The encounter came after police unexpectedly let more than 500 monks and other protesters through a roadblock on the street where Suu Kyi, 62, is under house arrest. “He was a singer whose exquisite voice made him a legend in life. Pavarotti was 71 and died Thursday morning at his home in Modena, Italy (Images: Pavarotti’s Career Strikes Right Notes in the link). A statement from his manager says, “The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life.” It says Pavarotti remained positive to the end, in keeping with the approach that characterized his life and his work”. “Ha dejado de agonizar el tenor italiano. El cantante de ópera, de 71 años, padecía un cáncer de páncreas y su estado de salud se había agravado durante los últimos días… El tenor italiano Luciano Pavarotti ha fallecido este jueves a los 71 años de edad, según ha informado su manager a la agencia de noticias AP. En el comunicado, su representante asegura que “el Maestro luchó en una larga batalla contra el cáncer de páncreas que le ha quitado la vida” y destaca que hizo frente a la enfermedad del mismo modo que encaró su vida y su trabajo, “permaneciendo positivo” hasta finalmente sucumbir a la enfermedad.
El estado de salud del tenor se había agravado en los últimos días después de haber permanecido hospitalizado dos semanas. Finalmente había sido trasladado a su residencia de Módena, desde donde, en las últimas horas, se había informado de que su estado era extremadamente grave, con pérdidas de consciencia y problemas renales. A Pavarotti le fue diagnosticado un cáncer de páncreas el pasado año, por el que fue intervenido en un hospital neoyorquino en julio de 2006 y en agosto de este año había reiniciado el tratamiento contra la enfermedad”. El cantante ópera murió hacia las 5 horas de la mañana de después de que los medios italianos difundieran ayer unas declaraciones de Pavarotti en las que agradecía el Premio Excelencia en la Cultura de Italia que le concedió ayer el Gobierno italiano y que, según declaró, “celebra la magia de una vida dedicada al arte”.
